So I made it through one semester as a double major. psh. That wasn't so bad. ...
I really do love having film and video to work on, and having illustration as something to ground me with. Its not like I really have a social life, so all the homework keeps me entertained, and I have a lot of fun with it.
Heres some finals and other works I did over this first semester:
This was created for my Video class final. I wanted to trigger memories of ourselves as children. Not just in the audience, but in myself. This time of year back home with all the gray trees and cold nights inspired me to create a small short portraying remembering the innocence and curiosity that most of all of us felt when we were small. When we do find ourselves older recalling a familiar sense, we see it at a distance and race after it, then we find it, feel it and then its gone. You'll remember feeling it, but you wont feel it anymore. The ideas and images that came to my head for this, were all edited shots of my own memories in that horse barn as a kid when I used to ride horses myself. At a young age I was with these huge animals and had to learn a language of trust and patience, and from this we both had to work as one thing. I always remember a feeling of depth and presence to the horses, and I wanted to capture that. I remember also riding outside in the ring, waiting for an instructor and talking quietly to my horse. Sometimes my horse would stop, perk her ears and look into the woods like something was there very close. I would look too and I always thought they must see and hear so much more than we ever could.
here some stuff from digital illustration:
Sea Turtles
This was the film I did for my final. I recored all the sound for it and really, I’ve come to appreciate film a lot.
its just.. expensive. Next semester we are going to be using color film, which is more expensive. ah well, the experience is all worth it in the end. I think I have rediscovered my patience again with working with film and it forces you to be more organized when it comes to thinking and planning ahead before you film.
This film.. I’ll admit, I didn't do as much planning as I had hoped and with a cast scarce I had to think on my toes at the location. Thanks to my friend Jake, he made it a lot more interesting by jumping in the freezing ocean..... in his boxers. While I was there at the beach, I knew if I wanted this film to go at least somewhat close to how I originally wanted it I would need at least one more person..
So finally.. after kind of creeping on this guy in a wet suit who was searching the waves near by, I walked up to him and asked if he wanted to be in a movie. Hes name was Dan and he was totally chill about helping out. thanks man.
so, I consider this film.. a practice run, for something much bigger. I wanted to show in a playful way, freedom and being reborn into the idea that there is a bigger world out there beyond from where you came from, so go tell your friends and go for it.
like newborn sea turtles??
so someday.. ill do this.. with more sand, more people.... naked or something. haha.
I’ve tried to explain the process of editing film, its a lot of fun when you aren’t being rushed or under pressure..
but i made this short vid to show everyone who I attempted to explain this too.
Heres some things I created in another of my illustration classes:
