I would have to say, that both of my semesters for my first year at art school had two major themes to them.
... woah.. im done with my freshman year. better slow down!
So first semester was the whole, “ahh! city! nature vs city!” but for this time around I was more focused on a bigger picture. For a couple of my projects for different classes I began to portray the idea of how we are all one thing. This type of philosophies can be found almost anywhere but more familiar in Buddhist philosophies. Om, is the whole universe condensed into a single sound and represents the union of mind, body, and is known as a spirit that is at the heart of yoga.
For my 3d study class, form study, I did my first ever earth works piece. I documented it by making a relaxing movie while I constructed the Om symbol out of smooth stones next to a river. The piece was site specific to be next to the river.
"...The river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current in the ocean and in the mountains, everywhere, and that the present only exists for it, not the shadow of the past nor the shadow of the future."
Herman Hesse, Siddhartha
The people in my class who saw the vid suggested Andy Goldsworthy. I had never heard about him before that, I bought one of his books and I must admit I am now obsessed.
Hope you enjoyed.
My next project also held the same theme of unity, but I decided to show it in a more abstract sense. It took a lot of planing and so much work. I had the image and movements in my head and then decided to attempt to create my own music for it. I tried to get them to fit and movie together and I am pleased with the result.
The concept I am attempting to portray is about how death comes from life, and we move about in this cycle circling, becoming and returning.
I hope you liked it, if you are kind of curious about what the heck I did to make this, I created a short “behind the scenes” vid for everyone. This whole project was a blast, and I thank everyone who helped me out so much with this, like my mom for running around with me trying to get all the materials for it, and my dad for video taping, uncle Tim and Grandpa for all the stills, Papa for the lights, Bungya for the amazing brownies.
